District 300 Referendum n Big Trouble – Daily Herald Reporter Has Figured Out Tax Hike Misrepresentation

So, when Carpentersville (Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Hampshire, etc.) School District 300 started talking about doing what the Huntley School District 158 did, the “warning, danger” antennae went up.

Daily Herald reporter Jeffrey Gaunt wrote a column entitled, "District 300 tax increase boggles reporter’s mind” (The Daily Herald only allows access to its articles/columns for one week.)

“I’m supposed to be objective, right? Well, let me objectively say that a 55-cent tax increase in District 300, at best, will fail to fully address the district’s financial concerns, if collected the way officials propose.

"At worse, it likely will tear District 300 apart much the way it tore apart District 158.”

Farther down in the column is this: “Unlike in Huntley, District 300 officials are in a position to know now that there are significant problems with the state’s tax-cap law.

“Still, Superintendent Ken Arndt Monday recommended the exact same 55-cent tax increase that became a catalyst for chaos in District 158.

“I think that was a mistake.”

Will the Daily Herald replace a reporter who obviously seems to think District 300 officials are about to mislead their voters?

The reporter makes it clear that he thinks District 300 needs more money, but he seems to be sending an early warning that he will report the truth about any tax hike proposal, regardless of what "spin" school district spokesmen desire.

He ends his column characterizing School Superintendent Arndt's recommendations as "somewhat misinformed."
