National GOP Chairman Calls for More Volunteers, While Illinois GOP Ignores Issue That Led to Volunteer Recruitment in Ohio
In Ohio, as attendees to the Illinois Family Institute lakefront fundraiser learned this summer, getting a referendum on the ballot to prevent gay marriage and, then, getting it passed, was the incentive for tens of thousands of volunteers to urge voters to go to the polls. That most of those so urged voted GOP, as well as against gay marriage, was not overlooked by national Republicans last fall.
There is no such acknowledgement by Illinois Republican leaders. Such an amendment to the United States Constitution is included in last year’s National Republican Platform.
The IFI is attempting to place an advisory referendum on the ballot about gay marriage, but only two GOP candidates—-Jim Oberweis and Kathy Salvi--seem to have embraced it.
There may be others, but it is clear that Mehlman’s favorite in Illinois—Judy Baar Topinka—is not one of them. Topinka not only glories in her participation in the Gay Pride Parade every summer, but her office offered the new gay/lesbian/etc., hangout, the Center on Halstead, a $10 million taxpayer-backed loan.
Does anyone think that the type of volunteers who were activated in Ohio will even want to go to the polls if Topinka gains the Illinois Republican gubernatorial nomination?
