Beaubien Petition Challenge: "This is not a frivolous challenge.”
Beaubien filed 741 signatures, giving him almost a 50% margin of error. He has 241 signatures that can be disqualified and still stay on the ballot.
But, the challenger says there are 138 not registered at the address shown on the petition and 105 living outside Beaubien’s district. That’s 243/
Morris’ filing with the State Board of Elections claims the following:
· 138 not registered at the address shown on the petition
· 105 living outside his Illinois House district and
· 59 bad signatures, that is, they did not match those in the registration binder
· 9 with their signature printed, not written
The bad signature objections can be cured by having the voters affirm that it was their signatures.
In addition, 19 complete pages are being objected to,
· 3 because of improper notarization, e.g., the notary saying he/she is in Lake & McHenry Counties, when the petition was obviously signed only in one location
· 2 with the circulator’s address incomplete and
· 2 with 11 signatures, rather than the standard 10, the objection being that the petitions are not uniform
In all, 389 signature lines have objections pending. That leaves 451 signatures which the petition objector admits are legitimate.
The question is whether Beaubien’s attorney can convince the Election Board that 49 of the challenged signatures are legitimate.
Beaubien told the Daily Herald, “I’m not concerned at all.”
“The rules of ballot access need to be taken seriously and applied uniformly,” Morris told McHenry County Blog. “Incumbents should neither be favored nor disfavored in the process. The truth lies in the facts and we expect the facts to come out in the hearings. Ms. Godawa and her assistants were extremely diligent in combing through voter registration records to make sure of the grounds on which her objections are based. This is not a frivolous challenge.”
