Gambling Opponent Tm Grey and Rosemont Mayor Don Stephens Break Bread
When I re-entered the General Assembly in 1993, I started hearing about Grey. When I saw that he was going to speak at the Marengo Methodist Church, I drove over to hear him.
At the beginning of his talk, he asked all the kids to come down to the front of the church.
“Got any money?” he asked.
Lots of the kids raised their hands.
He asked for the money.
He gave them shiny used Lottery tickets in return.
Then, he gave his sermon.
When was finished, he told the children they would return to their parents.
“What about our money?” or something similar, several asked.
“Oh,” Grey said. “That’s the lesson for today. When you gamble, you lose.”
Some of the quotes may be a bit off, but the message isn’t. I am sure the kids will remember that lesson for their entire lives.
Crystal Lake’s Methodist Men heard Grey last January. Then, he was off to a meeting with gambling opponents in Arlington Heights, I think.
