McSweeney "Buck Stops Here" Mailing – Inside Right (Click to Enlarge)
This is the inside left of the big pamphlet. There is a photo of McSweeney working and one of his wife and the girls.
The message is that "Spending in Washington is out of control." McSweeney starts with the deficit of $8.2 trillion and pledges to "end this wasteful spending...including frivolous projects like the $223 million 'Bridge to Nowhere.'"
Then, McSweeney advocates
· lower tax ratesOne might ask if there is any conflict between bringing spending under control and cutting taxes.
· making President Bush's tax cuts permanent
· tax incentives for small businesses
· cutting unnecessary regulations and
· simplifying the tax code.
It reminds me of the position Lyndon Johnson took in 1965-66 when he insisted on pressing the Vietnam War and the Great Society, even though my boss, Budget Director Charles Schultz advised him against it:
"Charlie, my boy," Johnson is reported to have said. "I don't want to lose any Democrats."Not exactly on point, but, cutting this deficit with a war going on is not going to be easy for a freshman congressman.
