Part III – Sun-Times Questionnaire – Fees, RTA, Favorite Book & TV Show

The next question takes me back to 1973, when the all four Chicago newspapers were pushing for the creation of the RTA. I figured it was because Downtown was declining and their major advertisers were located there.

The Sun-Times wants to know if the funding formula for the Regional Transportation Authority should be changed?

That, of course, means, “Should the Chicago Transit Authority be given a bigger share of the RTA taxes raised throughout Chicagoland?”

When the RTA was being debated in the auditorium of what is now known at the Howlett Building, opponents presented amendment after amendment. I had one being drafted to buy everyone in the six county area subscriptions to each of Chicago’s daily newspapers—the Tribune, Sun-Times, Daily News and Chicago Today. I figured their support for the RTA was primarily because people in trains can read newspapers, while those in cars cannot. Unfortunately, Speaker Bob Blair accepted a motion requiring a vote before the amendment could be drafted.

During the referendum campaign, I found a memo from CTA Chairman Milton Pikarsky revealing that the only reason subsidies from outside Chicago were needed was to keep the CTA trains running over night.

The CTA is pretty much like schools. Neither will ever have enough money.

The final questions ask the best book the candidate has read in the last year and why, plus the candidate’s favorite TV program.

That’s all, folks.
