BARTELS ANNOUNCES WITHDRAWAL FROM 8TH DISTRICT CONGRESSIONAL RACE
Today – Teresa Bartels announced that she will begin the process of withdrawing her name from the 8th District Congressional race. A first time candidate facing several well-known political names, Bartels cited the inability to compete with the spending of her opponents, along with a desire to be fair and considerate to her volunteers and donors, as reasons for her withdrawal.
The following is a statement by Teresa Bartels:
“I decided to enter the race 7 months ago because I felt the Republican Party, and government service, would benefit from an ordinary citizen with strong business and community service background. I planned to bring common sense and a real world perspective to this district and government service…I feel that I have accomplished that and more. Along the way, we have had a great deal of support and success in fundraising, at times even exceeding that of my opponents. While I have invested some personal money in my campaign, I do not feel it is practical to compete with the $1 million or more some of the other candidates are willing to spend. It doesn’t fit with my approach to business, life, and government. I am withdrawing now because it is the right thing to do to provide voters with a clear choice on March 21st.
Let me be clear that I am not criticizing my opponents for spending their own money to pursue elected office. This is America, and our laws protect free speech-including the right to spend personal funds for political speech. But I have told my family that putting up to a million dollars into this race just isn’t right for me at this time.
I want to thank the 350 volunteers and nearly 1000 donors who have helped over the past months. My campaign has attracted the interest of many people who had lost interest in the political process. This re-invigoration of voters-good citizens-is one of the real successes of our campaign and will be important to a victory over Melissa Bean in November. Chuck and I will never forget the many people who have been with me from the first days running the campaign from our kitchen. I look forward to a continuing friendship with so many of the good people I have met in the past months and to working with them in the years to come.
