Northwest Herald Opposes Protect Marriage Referendum Before It's on the Ballot

The NW Herald also contends
Moreover, public debate and political capital will be wasted on a wedge issue meant to mobilize conservative voters. An advisory referendum does not change law.
It has been the NW Herald’s choice to ignore the repeated collection (and even theft) of petition signatures at St. Thomas Catholic, plus other Christian churches in McHenry County.

As to putting the question on the ballot, Springfield lobbyists for family interests can tell the legislators who have committed to voting to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot.

They tell me that the votes are there, but Democratic Party leaders of both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly refuse to allow a vote. The referendum is intended to provide ammunition to convince rank and file Democrats that their constituents favor being able to be allowed to vote on the real thing.

Here’s the question that will be on the ballot, if the petitions withstand certain homosexual scrutiny. (They obviously think ballot results would not be to their liking.)
Shall the Illinois General Assembly submit an amendment to Article IX of the Illinois State Constitution to the voters of the State of Illinois at large at the next General Election stating as follows:
To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations of children, a marriage between a man and a woman is the only legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State?
Maybe the NW Herald will ask State Representatives Mark Beaubien, Jack Franks and Mike Tryon, plus State Senators Pam Althoff and Bill Peterson, if they would vote to put a Protect Marriage constitutional amendment on the ballot. Or, would that present the other side of the story, something the NW Herald certainly cannot be accused of doing on this issue.

As to the petition gathering being used “to mobilize conservative voters,” which “conservative” power party candidate would the NW Herald think the effort might help?
· Republican Judy Topinka, who flaunts her support of the Gay Pride Parade, or

· Democrat Rod Blagojevich, who signed the bill that forced the Gay Games Regatta on Crystal Lake.
